4 Keys to Building the Business of Your Dreams
By Erica D. Wyatt, PhD
Entrepreneurship can be a roller coaster ride of emotions. If you are a seasoned entrepreneur or just getting started on your journey, you know the feeling of going from excited and crystal clear to terrified and totally confused.
My personal entrepreneurial journey has taught me many lessons over the years about overcoming the challenges of building a business so that you can service your clients while realizing your own dreams for life and business.
In this article, I want to share with you key takeaways from my journey that I am hoping will help you avoid many of the mistakes that I made as a brand new entrepreneur.
1. Become the CEO of your business
If you want to build a successful business, you must view your business from the position of a CEO. If you treat your business like a hobby, you will only yield minimal results. Becoming the CEO of your business has nothing to do with how much revenue you have coming in or whether you have employees on your payroll. Being the CEO of your business is all about your mindset and how you approach your business.
You must take time to step back from working in your business so that you can work on your business. I encourage you to put at least one day a month on your calendar as a “CEO” day. This is a day that you can set aside for looking at the big picture of your business. This is a time where you can set 30, 60 or 90 day goals that all stem from your 12 month vision for your business. Don’t delay, get started today!
2. Focus on ONE thing at a time.
This has probably been both the hardest and best lessons that I have learned as an entrepreneur. I am sure that you have heard the saying that what you focus on grows. The truth is that often we don’t experience the results that we desire in our business because we have our hands in too many pots.
Yes, it is true that most entrepreneurs are very creative and have many different great ideas. Even though you may have a portfolio of amazing business ideas, it doesn’t mean you should attempt to work on them all at the same time. If you are anything like me, you have been the victim of “shiny object syndrome” more than once on your entrepreneurial journey.
I want to encourage you to find one thing within your business to focus on. This one thing should be something that is going to bring you one step closer to achieving one of the goals you have set for your business. This points back to the importance of having a CEO day written into your schedule at least once a month.
For example, if you have an overall goal to increase your visibility, you can focus on building your email list if you don’t already have one or if you just want to grow it by a certain number of subscribers. How would your business change if you focused all of your energy on building your email list for the next 30, 60 or 90 days?
3. Create systems early on.
Another thing that I had to learn the hard way is the importance of creating systems in your business. Believe me, the earlier you implement systems in your business, the better off you will be. One of the most frequently asked questions that I hear from many new entrepreneurs is what is the best platform for building a website, creating courses, keeping track of customers, sending email campaigns, creating funnels and the list goes on and on…..
Over the years, I have tried a variety of platforms in an attempt to piece together the many different systems needed to effectively and efficiently run a business. One of the headaches with having to use different platforms for everything is figuring out how to piece them together so they flow correctly. Another negative aspect of having to use different platforms is the costs associated with each one especially if you are just getting started and don’t have consistent monthly revenue.
I was recently introduced to an all-in-one platform that has truly transformed my business. FEA Create allows me to run all aspects of my business from one platform for one monthly price. I am able to save time and money by having all of my business tools and systems in one place. I encourage you to find the tools and systems that work best for you and your business and that allow you to work smarter and harder. 4. Seek out guidance from a coach or mentor
In my opinion, being a successful entrepreneur is 90% mindset and 10% skills. There are days when imposter syndrome has the tendency to speak louder than your experiences or skill set. I believe that the best solution to successfully overcoming the many challenges and hardships of entrepreneurship is having someone in your corner who has already been there and done that.
The key to successful mentorship is finding someone who is truly passionate about seeing you succeed. You want to learn from someone who is willing to be transparent about their wins as well as their losses. Over the years, I have been a part of several different group coaching and mentorship programs.
From all of those experiences, I would suggest Carrie Green’s FEA Members Club (Affiliate Link: https://go.femaleentrepreneurassociation.com/fea-mc?fpr=erica-31) hands down. Carrie and her team are passionate about ensuring that everyone who is a member of her community has all of the tools and resources they need to accomplish their personal life and business goals. Outside of the 70+ masterclasses available inside of the Member’s Club that cover everything from crafting your business idea to marketing and selling with love, the customer service experience is top notch.
Team FEA provides hands-on support each and everyday. On top of the support from Team FEA, the FEA community is one of the most supportive I have ever experienced. You will have your questions answered, have the opportunity to have your projects reviewed and you may even find your ideal client inside of the community.
Whether you choose the Member’s Club or not, I encourage you to not overlook the role that having a great mentor or coach in your corner plays in your overall business success.
